Learn why tourists feel at ease in Colombian territory
In Colombia (being a little specific: in Medellín, Cartagena and, mainly, Bogota) tourists, especially those belonging to the LGBT community, feel comfortable because the country is undergoing changes, which have been coming for some years, which favor the rights of people who are in the national territory, whether Colombian or foreign.
It is a great achievement for the country to have been named as the Emerging LGBT Destination in the Fitur (International Tourism Fair) of Madrid, Spain. And this is due to all the approved legislations that have affected very positively this community, and the country in general, when starting to be recognized as an egalitarian country, that seeks the well-being of all who are in it.
These legislations are:
- Egalitarian marriage.
- Right to survivor’s pension for homosexual couples.
- Advances in favor of adoption by same-sex couples.
- Possibility of changing the gender in the identity document.
- Protection of the LGBT community in the new Police Code.
The country, mainly its capital, is already more modernized in terms of classical Colombian thinking, so it participated in the Fitur LGBT and received the Diversity Consulting International award in the destination category.
El turismo se ha visto potenciado desde entonces pues, según estudios, las parejas homosexuales viajan 3.5 veces más que las heterosexuales and besides, they spend a lot more money on a trip. Tourism for this sector is growing twice as fast, so tourism for the country is beginning to become an even stronger base for the country’s economy.
In addition, the country has many events and activities dedicated to the LGBT community throughout the year, making it a well-known tourist destination for any season. And as a curious fact, it has the prestige of having the largest gay bar in Latin America.
